Well, if you use a system that picks dogs by eliminating them like I do, I suggest 4-dog quiniela boxes. That way, you have a better chance of covering all the dogs that you like without spending more than $12 on a race.
Of course, that’s assuming that you can handicap well enough to get down to four dogs that you really think have the best chance of being in the quiniela. If you can’t do that – even with a good handicapping system – then it’s time to practice on paper some more before you put your money down for real.
If you pick dogs by looking for the best dogs, then it might be that a trifecta bet is best for you. It might even be possible, depending on how good you are at picking the top dog in a race, that a wheel or key bet is best for you.
I’m usually not good at picking one standout dog in a race, although I’ve been known to pick a few longshots with my favorite system. So keying and wheeling don’t work as well as boxes for me.
However, that doesn’t mean that I don’t think they’re good bets if you’re the type of bettor who can find that one dog to key on with a good chance of being right. If that’s your style, go for it.
